Opening plenary at the association of teachers of mathematics 2016 conference

Her talk on the art of representation was enthralling, taking us on a historical journey of exploration of the patterns and designs that each culture is known for, before leading us to ways of representing algebraic expressions with areas.  The opportunity to work with and explore patterns using geometric shapes was thought-provoking and creative, and the final activity of making a bead bracelet representing our names in base 3 was a nice way to end and to have something to literally take away from the session.

Those of you attending the 2016 Conference may have, for example, been stimulated by Jackie Fairchild’s introductory plenary – a typically ATM mixture of practical activity and reflective ideas.

Reflections on the 2016 conference

The opening plenary by Jackie Fairchild reminded me of the human dimension of mathematics, that mathematics is all pervasive and all around us.  What was superb for me, was that she is a teacher, not an academic removed from the classroom.  She also spoke from the heart.  She sees mathematics historically and currently as a vital human process, with room for exploration and achievement.

Annual conference of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME)

Thank you for speaking at the annual conference of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) on 15 March 2011. The Committee was delighted that you were able to join us in engaging with teachers, policy makers and other stakeholders to discuss a wide variety of important mathematics education issues. The annual conference is a key item in ACME’s agenda and we are grateful for your part in making the day a great success. Your presentation was very well received and we really valued having the opportunity to hear your particular view on the importance of a National Policy for mathematics 5-19.
